A triangle cut is a calibrated fancy shape: three straight sides meeting at defined points, faceted with broad, flat step-cut planes rather than the many small facets of a brilliant cut. That step-cut faceting is the point of the shape — it keeps the stone quiet and geometric, so it frames a center diamond instead of competing with it for attention. Triangles are sold almost exclusively as side stones, most often as a pair flanking a round, cushion, or oval center in a three-stone or trilogy ring.
Orientation matters when specifying the shape: a triangle can be set point-up (apex toward the finger, base toward the center stone) or point-down, and the two orientations read very differently once mounted. Point-up is the more common convention in trilogy rings because it echoes the taper of the shank; point-down reads more architectural and is chosen deliberately for a flatter, more geometric look.
